Migrating an SME to Infomaniak Public Cloud
Moving an ageing on-premise infrastructure to Infomaniak Public Cloud (OpenStack), with fully declarative infrastructure and a validated disaster recovery plan.
Context
A Geneva-based industrial SME was running its ERP, file shares and internal tools on three physical servers hosted in its premises. End-of-life hardware, manual backups, no tested recovery plan.
The goal: get out of the local datacentre without losing data sovereignty (Swiss hosting required), while laying the foundation for modern infrastructure management.
Work delivered
- Full audit of the existing setup (load, dependencies, maintenance windows)
- Choice of Infomaniak Public Cloud (OpenStack) for Swiss sovereignty
- Target design: VPC, subnets, security groups, load balancers
- Terraform code for the entire infrastructure (reusable modules)
- Ansible provisioning of the VMs (hardening, monitoring, backups)
- Migration in batches with planned windows (4 weekends)
- Disaster recovery plan tested for real: full restore in under 2 hours
Outcome
- 100% of the infrastructure described as code, versioned in GitLab
- Infrastructure costs reduced by ~35% (vs. hardware amortisation + maintenance)
- Encrypted, automated, weekly-verified backups
- Internal team trained on Terraform and OpenStack basics (2-day training)
